Gun fact: Around 1870 Smith & Wesson was approached by the military attaché for the Russian embassy in Washington, D.C. about a large sale of their no. 3 revolvers to the Russian Imperial Army. Only one thing, the attaché - a guy named Gorloff - had some reservations about the externally-lubricated American .44, so the contract stipulated that Smith & Wesson develop an internally lubricated version of the .44.
