Now honoured with the title ‘Patron of the Italian Army Invading Eastern Africa’, the Holy Virgin and Her Beloved Son would attract more volunteers for Mussolini’s Blackshirts, demonstrate divine support for their military adventure, and empower the conquering heroes to strike down the ‘heretics and schismatics’ against whom the cardinals and archbishops of Italy had risen in their righteous fury. This was a crusade par excellence. As the Regia Aeronautica (the Royal Italian Air Force), overhead dropped flowers, and flyers extolling the inseparability of the new Trinity—Fascism, the Mother of Christ and the invasion of Ethiopia—nothing like this had been seen since 1209, when the great crusading Catholic armies set out down the Rhone valley to wreak havoc among the heretical Cathars in the Languedoc.
