Różnie z tym bywa. Im dany zwierzak bardziej podobny do dzisiejszych, tym lepiej. Mamuty i tygrysy szablastozębne łatwo porównać do dzisiejszych słoni i lwów, z dinozaurami musimy już trochę kombinować, eksplozja karbońska to już jazda bez trzymanki, a fauna ediakarańska jest tak dziwna, ze często nawet nie wiadomo z której strony ją ugryźć.

Dużo zależy też od stopnia zachowania badanych skamieniałości. Gdy ktoś opisuje garść zębów i dwa kręgi,
