He was the only one manning the Endurance. That's why he needs to be awake, to ensure that the system is performing capably, fix any faults, etc. If there is no Endurance, there is no point for Cooper and Amelia to return to, and continue the project. Then, it just becomes a Lazarus mission. And that'd be such a waste.
