One night we were running a route clearance mission(looking for IEDs), when the vehicle I was in the (Buffalo) fell through the road. So we called and all victor halt. SSG B and I had to get out of the victor( Buffalo) to see what damage had been done or if we had call for other asset to come and help with the recovery efforts. Needless to say this was around prayer call and there was a mandatory curfew in effect so no one should have been out of their houses. SSG B was climbing down the Buffalo so I pulled security from the top of the Buffalo and when SSG B reached the bottom he called out "set" which let me know that I could climb down so I did. When I reached the bottom we pulled another security halt and looked for any obvious indication of an attack or IEDs. After that we looked and found out that the Buffalo was unhurt and we could get it out by towing it with other victors we had present. So why SSG B was doing something not sure of what, a guy just walked up on me from the opposite side of the Buffalo( about 3 meters). So I put my rifle on him and started screaming "let me see your hands." I had seen too many people die from suicide bombers to know if he puts his hands down I am a dead man. So I had ever intention to kill this guy, at this time the prayer call went off making the situation even more eerie. About that time his son came running over about 5 years in age and started hugging his dad. And think that is the one of the reasons I didn't shot that guy that night along with we found out he was unarmed. But anyways SSG B heard me screaming and ran over to aid me. But anyways we let him go to be blew up the following day at the same spot exactly where this occurred, we made it on Al Jazeera. So now I feel bitter sweet about letting that guy go, because he could have been the same guy that tried to kill me.

There were a lot SVIED driving around so I was not taking any chances, so I shot a burst with the M240 right into the engine compartment to disable

1.Yes, numerous times I really didn't believe the media hype until the first time someone tried to kill me. Or when we did nice stuff for some Iraqi Nationals, just to find out later they had weapons cache in their homes. Things that bother me now are crowded places, rooms with one exit, any situation I can't see what is coming and going, or being around something that I
