The future first round pick will be the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2018 pick if it’s within the No. 2 to No. 5 range of the 2018 draft. If it is not, the Celtics will instead receive either Sacramento’s or Philadelphia’s first round pick in 2019, whichever is more favorable. However, if either of those 2019 picks result in the first overall selection, Boston will instead receive the other first round pick.

They’ll only convey 1 pick in that two year span

But now Philly has to arrange all of their future trades that might involve those picks around the protections to always make sure they’ll have at least one 1st, and they can’t stack certain protections because the CBA prevents that.

Boston just tied up 3 picks in one trade.

And if Philly gets involved in the K-Love or Butler deals they could lose pretty much all flexibility until Boston’s pick conveys, although I think Boston has the power to alter the pick protections that Philly would be dealing with, which gives Ainge a ton of insight into what Philly is going to be up to, and the power to get involved in a bunch of Philly’s trade positions.
