I'm amazed that no one in this thread (yet) has described the cryptographic way to do this. Give your heirs new private keys that currently control no bitcoins. Sign a time-locked transaction that spends your savings to the addresses of those keys, in whatever proportions you want. Set the time lock for, say, a year into the future, and keep the signed transaction among your personal effects where your family would find it if you were to perish. Every six months (i.e., well before the time lock runs out), replace the signed transaction with a new one that is locked a year into the future from the time of signing. In this way there will never be a valid transaction that passes your savings on while you're alive, but your heirs will have to wait a maximum of one year to claim your coins after you are no longer able to replace the time-locked transaction. Also, it's a good idea to check periodically that your heirs still have possession of the private keys you gave them. If they lose a key, you can give them a new one and replace your signed transaction.
