The unusual development of Proto-Indo-European *dw- into Armenian երկ- (erk-) has been extensively discussed. There is no universally accepted explanation. See երկն (erkn), երկար (erkar) and perhaps երկինք (erkinkʿ), երկաթ (erkatʿ) for more examples of the change.
