When discussing modern semi-automatic rifles with military heritages, there is no larger debate than that between the AR-15 and the AK-47. AR manufacturers have attempted to capitalize on the reliability of the AK by throwing a piston into their guns, and AK manufactures have tried to drag their weapons into the 21st century by slapping picatinny rails and polymer furniture everywhere. The problem with both these approaches is that they are trying to make these guns into something they were never designed to be, and moreover they are attempting to answer a question that has already been answered very well by Sig Sauer since 1985 with their 550 series of rifles.
