Despite a court decision to restore public access to the popular microblogging platform X and previous rulings against blocking internet services, the social media service has remained unavailable in Pakistan for over two weeks.
Although such decisions are usually officially "justified" by the authorities on various pretexts, this time the state seems to be very interested in providing an explanation as to why users are denied access to X.
This "strategic ambiguity" on the part of the authorities only adds to the confusion surrounding the status of the service in Pakistan.
For example, according to one of the lawyers representing the case against the suspension of
He then tried to sway the judge by pointing to the open X app on his phone as "evidence" of a claim that contradicts the findings of various international internet watchdogs.

The question arises: if the country's main regulator claims not to block access, who then prevents access to X?
The recently departed caretaker government treated the matter as if it were no problem: none of the relevant ministers were willing to comment or explain why residents of Pakistani territory could not access one of the most popular social media platforms in the world without a VPN, even though they regularly posted on the platform during their last days office.
The silence from official quarters continued even after new assemblies were sworn in, suggesting that authorities are not overly concerned that the main internet service remains suspended, apparently without the knowledge of the country's main regulator.
Given the state's nonchalance, it is natural to assume that the authorities are afraid to speak openly on this matter or are deliberately misleading the courts, hoping that citizens will accept this new "status quo" over time.

Neither of these scenarios is acceptable. X is a valuable source of information for millions of people around the world, and access to it cannot be arbitrarily denied. The state must at least explain its actions.
