In the typical French village of Wingen-sur-Moder, the US 70th ‘Trailblazer’ Infantry Division engaged in some of the most intense combat of the Alsace Campaign. Troops of the highly experienced German 6th SS Mountain Division broke through the American lines at Wingen on the night of January 3, 1945. The US 70th Infantry Division had not seen combat before. The SS troops secured the town, but had to defend it against heavy
