After 12 years, Spain is back in the Euro final for the fifth time. In a brilliant semi-final in Munich, the Iberian players beat France 2-1. On Wednesday, the Netherlands and England will fight for the final.
Spain achieved its sixth consecutive victory at Euro 2024 in Germany.
The Spaniards were more dangerous from the start and could have taken the lead in the fifth minute. Lamine Yamal crossed from the right and Fabian Ruiz headed over the French goal from a few meters.
France's response was lethal. In the 9th minute, Kylian Mbappe softly crossed the ball in front of the Spanish goal and Kolo Muani headed it in, surprising Unai Simon.
The "tricolours" followed up. A few minutes later, Mbappe burst into the opponents' penalty area and shot hard, but hit one of the defenders.
Then the plot took a complete turn. In the 21st minute it was already 1:1. Yamal scored a great shot from outside the penalty area past Mike Maignan. The 16-year-old thus became the youngest scorer in the history of the Euro. On Tuesday he was 16 years and 362 days old, on Saturday he will turn 17.
A moment later, Spain were already ahead when Jules Kounde, following a move by Dani Olmo, put the ball into his own net. Ultimately, however, the goal was awarded to Olmo. The Spanish maintained their modest advantage until the break.
In the 56th minute, Mbappe struck low from a dozen or so meters, but Simon was not surprised. The French team tried to equalize, but for many minutes they were unable to create a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
At the other end of the pitch, in the 81st minute, Yamal tried to copy his first-half feat, but his shot from outside the penalty area was off target. Ultimately, the Spaniards took the lead to the end and will play in Sunday's final.
The Spanish are three-time European champions. They last triumphed in 2012 during the Euro in Poland and Ukraine. The "tricolours" have won gold medals at the European Championships twice, in 1984 and 2000.
On Wednesday at 9pm the Netherlands will play England in the second semi-final. Of the four semi-finalists, only England have never won the European Championship. The Dutch won the championship in 1988.
The final is scheduled for next Sunday at 9 p.m. in Berlin.
