Death of the Princess De Lamballe (1908) by Leon Maxime

As you know, the French Revolution led to the overthrow of the monarchy and the emergence of a republic. In the heat of their rage, the crowd thirsted for the blood of the aristocrats and the royal family. Among those who died at the hands of the revolutionaries was Marie-Louise de Lambal, faithful to the service of Marie Antoinette. The death that befell this virtuous madam on September 3, 1792, is one example of the terrible atrocities committed by the mob during the revolution.

Arrested after the capture of the Tuileries, de Lamballe appeared before the revolutionaries, who decided to interrogate her.

First, she was offered to recognize the ideas of the revolution as true and curse the royal family.

De Lamballe swore allegiance to the ideas of freedom, equality and fraternity, but refused to curse her friends.

Then the journalist Jacques-Rener Hebert, who led the trial, said: “Free this aristocrat,” which in fact turned out to be a conditional sign for murder.
