Fans have been eagerly awaiting another installment in the 28 Days Later franchise, and now we finally have a release date: June 20, 2025. According to Variety, Sony Pictures announced on Friday that the upcoming film 28 Years Later will hit theaters then. It would have been fitting to release it on the original film’s 28th anniversary in 2030, but it makes sense they didn't want to keep fans waiting any longer.
28 Days Later, which starred Cillian Murphy in his breakout role, was released in 2002. A sequel with a different cast, 28 Weeks Later, followed in 2007. There were rumors of a 28 Months Later film, but it appears we're skipping that chapter. The new film will be directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, who both helmed the first movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Murphy will serve as an executive producer, Variety reports, but it doesn’t seem like he will have a starring role.

Plot details for 28 Years Later are still under wraps, but the film will reportedly star Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes. It could also be the first of three new movies in the franchise, with plans for a trilogy, according to THR.
Meanwhile, there's a different kind of war brewing in Hollywood – the popcorn bucket war. Dune director Denis Villeneuve recently took a jab at the Wolverine & Deadpool popcorn bucket, calling it “horrific” in a red carpet interview, while praising the Dune buckets as “unmatchable.”
